Medical math is much more than just getting a good grade although that’s not bad
either. Medical math is taught to help us learn how to deliver prescriptions, mix liquids
and how to calculate things like body mass index. It’s very important to be able to do
these correctly. Mistakes can have potentially bad consequences for the patient as well
as the nurses and doctors. As nurses we are patient advocates so it’s very important to
have a shared understanding of terms, numbers, weights and measures and the
process we use to find the solutions. This helps support the effective treatment of our
patients. It also helps with the communication between team members and during
change of shift.
Getting a good grade is important because we need it to advance into the nursing
program, but it also shows that we’ve worked hard to learn the material. On a personal
level getting a good grade is important. It means that I have learned about real world
issues that we’ll have to deal with as a new nurse in a hospital or a clinic. I struggled
some days, but knew that it was very important to learn the material to help me take the
first step into a clinical setting. I know that the more I continue to use what I have
learned it will become second nature. By going through the processes and many
calculations we learn to do what is right, but we also learn how complex a situation can
be and how easily a mistake can be made.
In conclusion both a good grade and the knowledge are important, but the knowledge
we take away from class will help us not only through the rest of our nursing program,
but also into our new careers.
